THE STARFISH STORY:

ONE STEP TOWARDS CHANGING THE WORLD

You may have heard this one before, but I think it’s always worth being reminded of it. Let me share the story, and then we can reflect on it together.

Once upon a time, there was an old man who would visit the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking along the beach every morning before starting his work. One morning, after a big storm, he was walking along the shore and noticed the beach was littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.

In the distance, the old man saw a small boy approaching. As the boy walked, he paused every so often. As he grew closer, the man could see the boy bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea. The boy came nearer, and the man called out, “Good morning! May I ask what you are doing?”

The boy paused, looked up, and replied, “I’m throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up on the beach, and they can’t return to the sea by themselves. If they don’t get back in, they will die when the sun gets high.”

The old man responded, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish, and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. He turned, smiled, and said, “It made a difference to that one!”

We all have the opportunity to help create positive change, but if you’re like me, you sometimes think, “I’m already so busy. How much of a difference can I really make?” This thought is especially common when we consider addressing massive social issues like world hunger or finding a cure for cancer, but it also appears in our everyday lives. So, when I catch myself thinking that way, I remind myself of this story. You might not be able to change the entire world, but at least you can change a small part of it for someone.

They say one of the most common reasons we procrastinate is because we see the challenge before us as overwhelming. A good way to counter that is to break the big challenge down into smaller pieces and tackle them one at a time—just like throwing one starfish at a time. To that one starfish, it makes all the difference.

School Profile

“ We believe- A single ordinary person still can make a difference and single , ordinary people are doing precisely that every day”-Chris Bohjalian

Although it is a single entity in its pursuit of educational reform, Shri-G International School has excelled for over five years in providing quality education to the students entrusted to its care. Over these years, the school has strived to ignite a passion for learning in the young minds of its pupils, preparing them for a future full of challenges, so that, in the words of Plato, “they may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.”

The school follows the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) curriculum up to the tenth grade. It encourages its students to embody the two qualities that define its ethos: achieving success through honest and diligent effort, and placing complete faith in God. The school also pays special attention to students with learning difficulties, offering continuous support from specially trained staff.

The student body, comprising 2,000 boys and girls, is divided into four houses: Uranus House, Earth House, Mars House, and Venus House. A wide range of extracurricular activities is offered as an integral part of the curriculum, providing every student with an opportunity to develop a well-rounded personality. Inter-house and intra-class competitions foster a healthy competitive spirit and loyalty to their respective houses or classes. Activities such as debates, dramatics, choral singing, elocution, math wizard, spelling bee, creative writing, and team sports like football, cricket, basketball, and throwball are among the various opportunities available to students.

Additionally, the school offers specialized clubs and programs, including the British Council, AFS, Gardening Club, Interact Club, Adventure Club, Service Over Self Club, Literary Club, and the School Choir. These clubs nurture the students’ love for nature, adventure, and service to the less fortunate.

The school is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories for physics, chemistry, and biology. In addition to a central library, the school boasts a computer laboratory that provides students with IT training. Interactive boards in classrooms enhance students’ understanding of concepts through video clips, 3D diagrams, and simulated experiments. The use of animated and pictorial representations allows teachers to explain complex concepts with ease, making learning more engaging and effective.
